The aim of this unit is to provide CFA Level I candidates a channel to obtain
knowledge that is necessary to succeed the examination. This course also can be
utilized as guidance on how to approach reading material and prepare for the exam.
Specific Objectives include:
Understand the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional
Conduct together with the Global Investment Performance Standards
Understand elementary statistics, data collection and analysis, correlation,
probability theory and distribution, time value of money and performance measurement
Understand macroeconomic and microeconomic principles.
Understand financial accounting procedures; the rules that govern disclosure;
difference in GAAP and accounting methods.
Understand and apply corporate finance knowledge in valuation process and
appreciate corporate governance’s impact on risk profile.
Understand the basic portfolio management process, including investment
setting, investment policy and asset allocation.
Obtain working knowledge on equity investment analysis, understand the
theories behind the analysis
Understand the principles underpinning the analysis of fixed income
investment and become capable of using valuation tools
Understand the principles of various derivative instruments and obtain
knowledge on how derivatives are applied in risk management.
The Exam
The Exam for CFA Level 1 will be held on 6th June 2010. The examination is divided
into two sections:
the morning and the afternoon. Each section is made of 120 multiple choices questions.
The Curriculum
The course is structured by carefully evaluating the content, difficulty, exam weighting and inter-link of each mandatory knowledge component of CFA Level I. The course structure itself is an effective planning tool for students to plan their study and reading. The course provides in depth discussions on all the key knowledge components that may be tested in the CFA Level I exam. The course naturally set up a platform where students can exchange knowledge, questions and experience. The timing of the course is in perfect match with the CFA exam timetable. The entire course is divided into 28 lectures and 2 mock exams. The mock exams will:
allow the students to assess their knowledge base;
form a accurate assessment of their strength and weakness;
help students to understand the unique exam structure; and
help students to plan their strategies for the real final exams.
